Coming in autumn 2024: the German Postdoc Network
Postdocs play a vital role in German research, but they face challenges such as unclear career paths, short-term contracts and mental health issues. Various German institutions and postdoc networks are collaborating to launch the German Postdoc Network in autumn 2024. This initiative is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and open to all postdocs in Germany. The network aims to provide postdocs with a comprehensive platform for information, representation and support. It seeks to create a community, offer career and well-being guidance and represent the interests of postdocs. The project will involve gathering data on postdocs’ needs, coordinating working groups and informing postdocs about the existing support services available to them. Find out more in this article!

The revised Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz in a nutshell
German is famous for its long words – and the law that regulates fixed-term employment contracts and working conditions in German academia is no exception. The Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG, Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act) applies to employees at universities and research institutions involved in research and/or teaching. Not without its critics, the law has undergone another revision in March 2024. This article by the German Scholars Organization (GSO) summarises the changes – and offers resources and valuable tips on how to deal with them.
